The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) is asking motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations to protect lives ahead of this year’s elections.
According to them, the number of road crashes shoots up mostly during election periods hence the caution.
This follows a report by the police showing that at least 1,141 lives have been lost in road crashes in 2020 across the country between January and June 2020 despite a drop in the figure as compared to 2019.
Speaking to Citi News, Executive Director of National Road Safety Authority, Ing May Obiri- Yeboah said her outfit will soon launch a campaign dubbed “Arrive Alive” to educate drivers and passengers on-road crashes.
“As an institution, we are teaming up with the media fraternity to come up with an ‘arrive alive’ campaign. We are going to empower passengers that even as they move, they are supposed to ensure that drivers go by the road traffic regulations. If something is happening and they are not happy about it, we as an institution can be informed, the media houses can be told and even the law enforcement agencies”, she said.
Road Safety Authority calls for stakeholder support for L.I
The Authority has recently been admonishing stakeholders in the transport industry to begin educating its members on the new Legislative Instrument that is coming to regulate the transport sector.
The purpose of the new regulations is to provide a framework for the coordination, regulation, implementation and enforcement of road safety procedures, standards and regulations.
The new position assumed by the Authority to become a regulator would go a long way to streamline the transport sector.
This is believed would help reduce carnages on the country’s roads.
Transport unions, garages, the Motor Traffic and Transport and Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and representatives of the Ghana Highways Authority have all been urged to support the fight and implementation of the new policy.
