The Accra High School has hinted of management’s plan to roll out a campaign dubbed “Operation Read 2 Storybooks a semester”.
This campaign is aimed at inculcating the habit of reading among students and helping them improve their learning skills.
Headmistress of the school, Lydia Anim-Nketiah made this known at a Founders’ Day Celebration organized on Monday, August 17, 2020, to mark the 97th Anniversary of the school.
The event was largely organized by the old students of the school who are popularly known as “Onukpai”.
Speaking at the ceremony, the headmistress touched on how the campaign will work upon implementation.
“We want to encourage our students to read storybooks, two of them each semester. We will give each student a common book to read. After the reading, we’ll set up a committee. After they finish reading, the committee will set questions on that storybook and we’ll select one day, it will be about 30 to 45 minutes and every student in this school will write that exam. After the marking, the first three students will be given special prizes. And the first two hundred students, we’ll give them special lunch”, she said.
Madam Anim-Nketiah also urged all the old students to combine efforts in making this initiative a reality and success.
In response to her request, President of the Association, Professor F.K.E Nunoo, made a pledge of commitment to see the initiative through and urged all members to get on board.
“We are going to move into the regions and mobilize Onukpai in the regions and more. We have a new Head at this time and she’s coming in with new vigour, new energy and we’re praying that God will support her to help move the school forward. We want to realize the potential she talked about, she said we are a community of enormous potential, we will realize it. On this note National Executive Committee, (NEC) will like to tell all of us that it’s the time as year group, let us all lift up our game to move our school forward”, stated Prof. Nunoo.
A relative of the founder of the school, Judith Theresa Buckle, who represented at the ceremony, presented the Founder’s pastoral mantle in the form of a customized face towel as well as a silver coin to the President of the Old Students Association.
