Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Ayawaso East in the Greater Accra Region, Alhaji Olabode Williams has questioned the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to developing Zongo communities across the country.
He has also described the Zongo Development Fund as a charade because residents of such communities have not received any benefits.
Citing Nima as an example, Alhaji Olabode Williams claimed key developmental projects in the area were undertaken by the NDC government.
“All the promises the NPP gave the good people of the Zongos are charades. Where are the developmental projects? What are they doing with the Zongo Development Fund? If you go to Nima and the Zongo communities for instance, all the better things in there were done by the NDC government. But when the NPP came in, they stopped it. Today…any development in the Zongos was done by the NDC from Rawlings to Mills to Mahama.”
In his interview with Citi News, Alhaji Olabode Williams said the Zongo communities will on December 7, 2020, choose the NDC over the NPP in the general elections.
“If you go to Nima which is a typical Zongo community, the drains there were done by the NDC. All the streets in Nima that were asphalted was done by the NDC governemnt. NPP should come and tell us one major thing they have done for the Zongos. Kanda Highway was done by the NDC. We have built schools in the Zongos so I don’t see any single project that the NPP has done. They are only lying to the people. But I can assure you that, the Zongos cannot be deceived twice,” he added.
Upon assumption of office, the NPP introduced the Zongo Development Fund to assist Zongo communities to have their dilapidated schools rehabilitated, with scholarship packages for students.
The communities were to be provided with toilet facilities, construction of CHPS compounds and water facilities particularly in areas with water problems.
Already, the Upper East Region has benefitted from the construction of an Astroturf football field in Bolgatanga under the Ministry Inner Cities and Zongo Development.
Nana Addo courts support of Zongos ahead of 2020 polls
President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on inhabitants of Zongo communities to vote massively for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to enable him to retain power in the upcoming general elections.
The President says his government has done a lot for Zongo communities in the country and will do more should the party be given another term.
“I am here to plead with you that just as you did in 2016, vote for me again come December 7. If you are pleased with my work in the Zongo communities vote for me. There are more developmental projects I will bring to your doorsteps so I am pleading with you to help me.”
Meanwhile, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has said that the Akufo-Addo-led government has by far cared more for deprived communities than any other government in recent history.
