The State Housing Company (SHC) has expressed shock at allegations by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that some 500 units of affordable housing units being put up in Sefwi-Wiawso are non-existent.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had earlier disclosed that, out of 17,334 infrastructural projects initiated by the Akufo-Addo government in various parts of the country, 8,746 of them have been completed while the remaining are ongoing.
Dr. Bawumia made this known at the government’s 3rd town hall meeting and results fair held at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Science on Tuesday, August 18, 2020.
But at a press conference in Accra on August 24, 2020, the NDC’s National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, described some 26 projects captured on the government’s delivery tracker website as non-existent.
“The claim that this government is constructing 500 housing units at Sefwi-Wiawso which is 20% complete is palpable falsehood, as no such project exist.”
Reacting to the allegation on Eyewitness News, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the State Housing Company Limited, Gordon Asare Bediako said the project is underway.
“I read portions of the statement by Sammy Gyamfi and the bone of contention here is that he said the Sefwi-Wiawso and other projects are non-existent. The issue here is that what Sammy Gyamfi put out there is total falsehood, the project exists. We can go to Sefwi-Wiawso which is now the capital of Western North and you will see that the project exists. There are five major steps towards construction which is land acquisition, compensation to farmers, design and engineering, site clearance, physical structure, marketing and disposal. And out of these five steps, we have completed four steps.”
The PRO for the state housing company also expressed shock at the allegation, indicating that work was ongoing at the site.
“If you go to Sefwi-Wiawso right now you will see the land which has been graded with our signpost. So, I am surprised that Sammy Gyamfi is saying that the project is non-existent and that when you go there you won’t see anything, the project is there.”
