The Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West who doubles as the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison, says they are considering using the mobile money platforms as a mode of payment for beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty (LEAP) programme.
According to her, this is to make it easily accessible for the beneficiaries to get their monies.
Speaking to Citi News at Agona Nyakrome where the MP paid beneficiaries of the LEAP program their stipend, Cynthia Morrison urged the beneficiaries to put the money into profitable ventures in order to get returns.
“When we had the lockdown, we realized that most of the banks were afraid to mingle with the beneficiaries so it took some time to get their stipend. So I believe that when we use the MoMo payment option, it will be good and accessible to them and their monies will be on their phone.”
“We are also looking at them using the money not only to buy food because if they live on only that, it gets to a period you go and they will tell you that their monies are exhausted. But now we have encouraged them and some of them are already into profitable ventures like gari making, soaps making, among others,” the Gender Minister added.
The Agona West MP noted that their plan is for the beneficiaries to come together as a cooperative and put their monies together to work adding that when they come together, their work will be expanded and productive.
“The next thing I will want the beneficiaries to consider is to come together as a cooperative and work and when they do that, their work will be expanded. When I suggested it to them, they took it in good faith and I am sure it will work,” Cynthia Morrison said.
The beneficiaries extended their gratitude to the Minister for the payments made to them adding that they will put it to profitable use.
