The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, is appealing to the government to come to the aid of residents in the constituency affected by floods.
Torrential rains and water spillage from the Bagre dam have destroyed several homes and farmland in the Upper East Region.
According to the Builsa South legislator, the residents have not yet received any support from NADMO.
Speaking to Citi News, Dr. Clement Apaak called on the government to intervene as a matter of urgency.
“The situation is very bad. The rains are coming at a time when the ground is already filled with water compounded by spillage from the Bagre dam. So the water levels spread way beyond where traditionally the water is to be contained. So it has inundated a lot of farmland, carried away a lot of farm animals, many of which might have drowned. It is pretty bad. So, I want the government, the Regional NADMO Coordinator and Builsa South District to assess the situation and what needs to be done to ameliorate the suffering of those who have been affected.”
The spillage of the Bagre dam in Burkina Faso coupled with torrential rains in the Upper East Region have submerged the White Volta bridge at Kobore in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.
The situation has left hundreds of passengers stranded with a lot of livestock washed away.
The Upper East Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has thus advised all transport operators and private vehicles to suspend travel activities until the water levels recede.
“Traveller’s from Bolgatanga to Bawku or the other way around must take caution. The bridge at Kubore is submerged in water. The road leading to Bawku is flooded. Vehicular movement is impeded. Please do not be a victim of this hazard, prevention pays,” NADMO said in a brief statement.
Hundreds of farmlands have submerged and in some instances, buildings have collapsed.
Hard-hit districts are the Bawku Municipal, Bawku West, Binduri, Nabdam and Talensi.
In the North East Region, six persons have so far been confirmed dead due to the excessive spillage in parts of the Region.
