The Concerned Polling Station Executives and Youth of Mfantseman have threatened to boycott the December 2020 elections if the wife of the late Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, Ekow Hayford is allowed to replace him.
According to the group, pushing the wife of the MP to take his place is a selfish interest of some family members and party members.
“Barely a week ago, the nation mysteriously lost a great man and a friend. As a matter of fact, the party and even the opposition in the constituency suspended all party activities to mourn our dead MP. To our dismay, some family members and close allies of the MP due to their parochial interest are rather skewing the narrative and pushing for the wife of the late MP as his successor not even 24 hours after his death,” the statement noted.
The group questioned the validity of the MP’s wife’s status of contest stating, “Is the said wife qualified to represent Npp per the party constitution? Is she a card barring member of the party? Is she a dues-paying member? Has she even nurtured the party in the constituency? What are her contributions to the party both in the Constituency and national? What are her contributions to the Mfantseman Constituency? Is she popular within the Constituency and whether she can help us retain the seat with just a few days to the election?”
The Concerned Polling Station Executives and Youth of Mfantseman argued that James Korsah Brown will be a better successor to the late MP.
They added that Mr. Korsah-Brown was the most active candidate during the primaries and continued to support the party even after he lost.
“We emphatically recommend that a more formidable candidate who was the most active aspirant in the Central Region during the party’s primaries, James Korsah-Brown be announced by NEC as the successor of our dead MP. He has been part of the party even after he lost at primaries and has been very active with the constituency and national campaign serving as a campaign team member and manifesto subcommittee member respectively.”
The group stated that James Korsah-Brown is already popular within the community and has done a lot for them and as such will be the best candidate to win the NPP the seat.
“The “No Wife No Vote” campaign is not a true representation of the grass root and youth of Mfantseman and will plead with the Party hierarchy to present James Korsah Brown if not the Party will be sharply divided if someone else is presented since certain communities and the youth have already threatened to vote against the party if some family and party members succeed,” the statement noted.
