The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has announced plans to upgrade its Savings and Loan Company, Golden Pride into a fully-fledged banking institution.
Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah says the bank will be known as Labour Bank.
The bank will cater to the financial needs of workers.
Speaking at the commissioning of the renovated TUC office complex in Accra, Dr. Yaw Baah says workers deserve more hence the upgrade.
“We also have the Golden Pride Savings and Loans Company which is fully owned by the Ghana Mine Workers Union of the TUC. We have plans to upgrade it to a labour bank with established branches in all the 16 regions to provide loans to workers for housing and consider items and other consumable items including cars”, he said.
Golden Pride, a savings and loans institution licensed under the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Act 2008, Act 774 and owned by Ghana Mineworkers’ Union of Trade Union Congress (TUC), is a democratic and independent trade union organization affiliated to the TUC.
Touching on the refurbished TUC hall, Dr. Baah said more facilities have been added to ensure state of the art service delivery.
“The Hall now has 175 rooms including 132 offices; 3 conference rooms, a clinic we have a canteen that serves breakfast and lunch; and we have a post office. All the necessary equipment and gadgets have been installed to provide uninterrupted access to the internet and other services. There are installations to protect lives, in the unlikely event of fire outbreak. Two new lifts have been installed. The fence wall has improved security in the Hall. We have also ensured that there is an uninterrupted supply of electricity and water as well as the provision of sanitation services”, he said.
GHS 12. 7 million refurbishment
President Akufo-Addo who officially graced the event stated recognized and appreciated the efforts and sacrifices the TUC has made towards the construction of the happy and prosperous Ghana.
He recalled that in the run-up to the December 2016 elections, as part of several stakeholder engagements he held, he was in the Hall of Trade Unions, where he interacted with the leadership of the TUC, and outlined his vision for the transformation of the country, if he was elected President of the Republic.
“Indeed, the state of the Hall of Trade Unions, at the time of my visit in 2016, and in the early years of my administration, would have made the likes of Pobee Biney, Vidal Quist, and their successors very sad. That is why when Government received the request from the leadership of the TUC to assist it to refurbish the Hall, we did not hesitate. I have been told by the Minister for Finance that Government’s contribution to this refurbishment was twelve million, seven hundred thousand cedis (GH¢12.7 million)”.
