As December 7 draws near, the Bureau of Public safety is calling on the general public to adhere to road safety precautions in order to prevent road crashes.
Elections, coupled with the Christmas festive season are noted for recording high road traffic incidents including many crashes.
There have already been several incidents of road crashes particularly involving political party leaders and supporters.
Earlier last week, six supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who were attending a political rally at Ejura in the Ashanti Region died in a crash.
The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye was also on Sunday involved in a road crash but escaped unhurt.
The Executive Director of the Bureau, Nana Yaw Akwada indicated that road users must ensure that they exercise caution when on the roads since the roads are not safe.
He said he expects that road crashes in Ghana will be brought down to the barest minimum during the yuletide.
“We have called for the independence of the police service. If that thing is not there, there is no way any police officer today will arrest anyone who is violating the road traffic regulation once they can identify with a political party. What we can do now is to continue to educate people that our roads are dangerous, and they are not as safe as they are and people must exercise all caution when moving on our roads.”
Meanwhile, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in the Upper East Region in collaboration with the Regional Police Command has held a forum to sensitize political parties on road safety measures as the country prepares towards the December 7, 2020 polls.
The initiative was part of NRSA road safety campaign dubbed: “Arrive Alive” aimed at reducing road crashes in the country especially in election years.
