The Deputy Minister of Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum has expressed his displeasure at the work of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) with regard to reports of cheating and examination leakages during the 2020 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
“I am not pleased with the work of WAEC because there is a way to stamp out cheating in the classroom and if we don’t do it, we are undermining the great policies that various governments are implementing in the field of education because if children think they can cheat, why will they take learning seriously.”
Speaking on Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Adutwum stated that “This is not the first time this has happened. In this country, leakages happen every year, I would be surprised if this year’s had escalated, but according to WAEC, compared to other years they are on top of their game now. Some exams have been cancelled, we have a whole set of papers that leaked in the country, it has been happening, but I am not pleased about it”.
Mr. Adutwum advised that measures should be put in place to stop cheating during examinations.
Meanwhile, WAEC says it will be unfair to blame it for these leaks.
It, however, said it is committed to maintaining the integrity of the examination.
