Jean Mensa-led EC has lost credibility – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said the Electoral Commission (EC) has lost its credibility.

The NDC argues that the EC’s disregard for institutions in the country has led to an “irreparable” credibility crisis for the Commission.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Director of Election for the NDC, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah cited the EC’s disrespect of the Interparty Advisory Committee as examples to support its claim.

“The EC has shown that it is above the law and therefore and there has no regard for any institution in this country. But we don’t blame them for continuing to act this way because they have the support of the one who appointed them; Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo. This has created a credibility crisis for the Electoral Commission,” Mr. Afriyie said.

Mr. Afriyie Ankrah also accused the EC of excluding critical stakeholder from its decision-making processes.

He cited a 2019 US Human Rights Report by the US State Department, alluding to the fact that the report vindicates their position on the Jean Mensa administration’s bias towards the governing NPP.

EC lacks capacity to declare results

Mr. Afriyie Ankrah further indicated that the EC lacks the capacity to declare the presidential results of the December 7 polls.

He pointed out that the promise by the commission could create unnecessary tension.

He insists the Returning Officer for the presidential election, Madam Jean Mensa must certify results from the 275 constituencies before announcing the winner of the polls.
