The Presidency says it will “in due course” respond to issues raised by the former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu in his resignation letter.
In a statement signed by the Chief of Staff, Frema Opare, the presidency said it accepts Mr. Amidu’s statement and has taken note of the his complaints in the letter.
“The President has taken due note of the other matters raised in your letter, and the Government will issue a statement responding to them in due course,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, another statement from the Communications Directorate of the Presidency also indicated that the a “detailed response” will be given shortly.
“President Akufo-Addo has also taken due note of the other matters raised by the Special Prosecutor in his letter of resignation, and the presidency will issue a detailed response to them shortly.”
“The President has directed the Chief of Staff to contact Mr. Martin Amidu to resolve all outstanding matters consequent upon his resignation”
Martin Amidu on Monday November 16, 2020 resigned unexpectedly from office as the country’s Special Prosecutor.
Among other things, he cited interference by the government in his work although he is supposed to be independent and also the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings who to him, was a source of protection from the threats on his life after conducting a corruption risk assessment on the controversial Agyapa Mineral Royalties deal.
“In undertaking the analysis of the risk of prevention of corruption and anti-corruption assessment I sincerely believed that I was executing an independent mandate under the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Act, 2017 (Act 959) and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (Operations) Regulations, 2018 (L. I. 2374)”
“The reaction I received for daring to produce the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption report convinces me beyond any reasonable doubt that I was not intended to exercise any independence as the Special Prosecutor in the prevention, investigation, prosecution, and recovery of assets of corruption. My position as the Special Prosecutor has consequently become clearly untenable,” Amidu said in a statement on his resignation.”
Martin Amidu’s decision has been received with mixed reactions with some accusing the president of having double standards on the fight against corruption.
Others have described Mr. Amidu as one cowardly leaving his job.
