Bono East REGSEC condemns election violence in Techiman South constituency

The Bono East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has condemned the violent incidents recorded in the Techiman South constituency during the 2020 polls.

In a statement signed by its chairman and Regional Minister, Kofi Amoakohene, the REGSEC condoled with the families of the deceased and injured persons following the shooting incident in Techiman South.

“We condemn the isolated violent incidents recorded during the period. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and injured persons in respect of the violence, including the shooting incident in Techiman.”

It further indicated that it will “engage with the bereaved families for the necessary support.”

The Bono East REGSEC also noted that it has launched investigations into the shooting incident.

“All violent incidents, including the shooting is being investigated by the Regional Election Security Task Force. All persons with any evidence in respect of the incident are entreated to make them available to the Regional Police CID.”

It further appealed to all aggrieved persons and political parties to “use peaceful means to resolve and address their grievances and advise their supporters to desist from engaging in violent activities to disturb the peace of the Region.”

“We appeal to all stakeholders, opinion leaden, and the media to refrain from engaging in all acts and utterances that have the potential to incite supports to resort to violence.”

One person was reported dead at the Techiman Holy Family Hospital following a shooting incident in the constituency.

Several others sustained gunshot wounds.

The shooting incident happened when the deployed security personnel fired warning shots to try and control agitated onlookers at the election collation centre.

Citi News’ Michael Tsatsu Axorlu reported that the incident started after a misunderstanding ensued over the results when the were declared.

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah had won against Mr. Beyere of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
