The Nadowli Kaleo Constituency has gotten its first legislator not named Alban Bagbin since Ghana returned to a multiparty system in 1992.

Mr. Bagbin decided to step away from Parliament after 28 years and his successor in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sumah Anthony Mwinkaara, retained the seat for the opposition party.

Mr. Mwinkaara, a health administrator, polled 23,961 votes out of the 36,090 ballots cast.

His closest challenger was Elvis Banoemuleng Botah, from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who polled 7,664 votes.

Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention (PNC) also polled 4,465 votes.

Mr. Mwinkaara faced a stiffer challenge in the NDC primary where he overcame seven aspirants.
