We’ll welcome Fomena MP back if he decides to join us again – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says, the fate of the Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, will be decided by the National Executive Committee of the party should he consider re-aligning with the party.

Mr. Asiamah, who won the bid in 2016 to represent the people of Fomena on the ticket of the NPP, lost the 2020 NPP primaries to Philip Ofori-Asante.

He defied the party to contest as an independent candidate but emerged victorious despite sustained campaigns by the party against him.

With the NPP failure to retain a majority in Parliament, many have wondered if the only independent candidate to make it to Parliament would take sides with his old party.

But speaking to Citi News, General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, said, the leadership of the governing party will decide whether to welcome Mr. Asiamah back to the fold.

“He still insists that he is a party member but by his actions, he forfeited his membership. He can reapply, he can decide to join us. It is not a decision that can be taken by another body on the National Executive Committee. It is early days yet but if he clearly shows up to join the party, we will take him through the process and see what can be done about it”, he explained.

At the end of polls on Monday, December 7, 2020, Mr. Asiamah managed to obtain 12,805 of the total votes cast by beating his contenders – Philip Ofori Asante of the NPP and Christiana Appiagyei of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who polled 10,798 and 2,608 votes respectively.

The other contestant in the race, Eric Appiagyei of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) had 158 votes.

These confirmed final results from the Electoral Commission (EC) at the Fomena Constituency also showed that the total number of votes was 26,637 out of which 247 were rejected.

Akufo-Addo had said it will be in the best interest of the people of Fomena if Mr. Amoako Asiamah goes back on his decision to contest the parliamentary election as an independent candidate.

The President said he will ensure that Mr. Amoako Asiamah is comfortable in his next government should he change his mind.

Despite these assurances, some residents in the area particularly those in Akrokerri vowed to mobilize votes for the independent candidate as a result of his track record.
