A former New Patriotic Party parliamentary aspirant in the Wenchi Constituency in the Bono Region, Albert Ameyaw, has called for an end to barbaric acts against widows and old women in the society.
Albert Ameyaw made the appeal during a party he organised for 70 widows in the Wenchi Municipality.
He called for an end to tagging widows and old women as witches but rather embrace and care for them.
“We must understand that when our mothers get to a certain stage, there are a lot of things that change in their lives that we have to understand and appreciate it. Once we appreciate it then we can stop calling them witches. I think the society must come to terms this is not right, it is not the way to go as a society, we need to embrace them, we need to make them happy then we can understand them better. ”
He urged the government to take stringent measures against people perpetrating evil against old women in the country.
“People who perpetrate evil against such old women should be punished to serve as a deterrent to other people from indulging in such acts. ”
He also disclosed to Citi News the reason behind the party for the widows.
“As we are celebrating the birth of Christ then we need to show love with our neighbours indeed if we are Christians then we must behave like Christ, Christ showed love. Widows, as we called them, means they have lost their husbands, my mother is a widow I fed her, I asked myself what about other widows whose children are not grown to provide for them, we, therefore, decided to do something for these 70 widows.”
A 67-year-old widow, Adwoa Manu said, “May God bless Albert and his group. I have not seen such a thing before. May God empower him and strengthen him and his family for what he has done for us the widows.”
