A group, the Coalition for Ghana’s Independence Now, says it is not surprised about Achimota School’s insistence on two Rastafarian boys cutting their dreadlocks before being admitted to the school.
The group says, the conduct of the school, besides being racist, plays into the interest of colonialists who wish to mentally enslave citizens.
Authorities of the Achimota School had on Thursday turned home the dreadlocked students, asking their parents to trim their hair or find another school for them.
The news has since caught national attention.
After public outrage, GES directed the school to admit the two first-year students in spite of their dreadlocks.
But the school, after a meeting with officials of GES and the parents of the affected students insisted that it will not change its decision.
But in a statement, the group said President Akufo-Addo and the Ghana Education Service (GES) must immediately call the Achimota School to order.
“The President and the Nation has a lot to lose in this case than anyone involved. First, our President happens to be a human right activist who knows better than all of us when it comes to issues of this nature. Secondly Nana Akufo-Addo has brought the spotlight of the global community on himself and our beautiful country, Ghana by his Year of Return Festival and if he sits down and watches this disgraceful act of Negropean Racism, by the Achimota School, his reputation on the global African community will be destroyed beyond repairs,” the group said.
The group is of the view that President Akufo-Addo is the only one who can bring finality to the matter since Achimota School has categorically stated that it has won many of such cases in court and so it’s not shaken by threats that the school will be dragged to court for denying the two Rastafarians admission over their dreadlocks.
They further criticized religious groups in Ghana for “keeping quiet” over the ensuing matter.
