Wa West MP petitions Bagbin over insecurity in Ghana

The Member of Parliament for Wa West in the Upper West Region, Supt. Rtd. Peter Lanchene Toobu has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament over growing insecurity in parts of the country.

His letter dated 6th April, highlighted various crimes in Wa West, Bawku West, Sissala West and Awutu Senya East among others.

According to the legislator, as a member of the Defence and Interior Committee of the house, the matter requires urgent attention from the Parliament, although it is on recess.

The MP, who once served as Executive Secretary of the IGP in an interview with Citi News said: “The security situation in this country is not admirable at all. We should do something about it. I need the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, the Chairman of the National Security Council to provide leadership to arrest this decay. As I said in the statement, it might not be necessarily [start] with his regime. There are several things that are roll-over from the past, but the duty lies on the one that wears the crown. He is the President of Ghana now. What he can do is to demonstrate commitment to the fact that without security we cannot have development.”

In the letter, he proposed the formation of “one police unit each in Awutu Senya East Municipality, Wa West, Sissala West and Bawku Districts.”

Also, he further suggested the “use of smart policing (Police + Academia) to conduct research into violent crime association within Kasoa and its environs, the implementation of a smart traffic project to reduce road crashes and revamping police visibility”.

Cautioning about external militant groups in neighbouring countries, he said: “Let’s do something about the situation. As we sit with terrorism around us, and it is dropping, what are we supposed to do as a country? Let’s look at our internal vulnerabilities –the Kasoa area in the Awutu Senya East constituency is becoming a hotspot”.

His raised concerns about the “quiet majority of Ghanaians” being the “most dangerous thing when it comes to security. The more silent we become we are endangering the society. Let’s speak up.”

In a recent development, three other suspects have been arrested in relation to the ritual murder of the 11-year-old boy in Kasoa.
