Chiefs in Birim North have kicked against the renomination of the District Chief Executive of the area, Raymond Nana Damptey by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The chiefs made the decision when they passed a vote of no confidence against the DCE.
The chiefs took part in a voting process to either approve or disapprove the renomination of the DCE.
A total of 42 chiefs took part in the process and at the end of the day, only 4 voted YES in favour of the DCE while 37 voted NO. There was one rejected ballot.
The chiefs accused Mr. Damptey of disrespecting them, unnecessarily meddling in chieftaincy disputes, refusal to involve the chiefs in major decision-making processes among others.
In light of this, the Association of Chiefs in the Birim North District led by Obrempong Kwasi Amo Tweretwie I, officially petitioned the Presidency, Local Government Minister and the Eastern Regional Minister to communicate their decision against the DCE.
While the chiefs are raising issues against their DCE, some New Patriotic Party constituency executives in the area are also lobbying for the President to appoint their Chairman, Patrick Barnor, for the DCE position in the Birim North District.
In a letter to the Presidency, the NPP executives explained that the current DCE has been plagued with a myriad of issues making it “impossible for him to be reappointed as DCE” hence their request.
