Students at the Kakumdo M/A Basic School in the Central Region have received educational support as part of International Literacy Day.

The day, marked every 8th of September on the United Nations calendar is set aside to recount the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.

Marking the day with students of Kakumdo Basic School, the curators of the ‘Mobile Library Project’ under the Boa Daakye Foundation, together with partners, organised a Literacy Fair for students of the school who were taken through Digital Literacy as part of the Project’s ‘Mobile Learning Lab’ (MLL); as well as mentorship coaching in the areas of Financial Literacy, Career Guidance and the need to take studies seriously.

Some students also received support in the form of new school uniforms, while others with tattered uniforms had theirs mended.

In addition to this, the school also received a donation of four whiteboards to be used for teaching and learning.

The founder of the organisation, Kate Wodenya Amenyikor, indicated that the foundation is poised to promote the literacy of children in the Central Region while adding it is very important for everyone to support such an initiative.

“For about two months now, we have been preparing for this day. We couldn’t wait to join hands with the world to raise awareness of the need for literacy and also call all hands on deck to help solve issues hindering quality education. We are very excited that we managed to put all this together. Even though we did our part, we believe there is still more to do. I will use this opportunity to call for more support and partnership because we have more in stock to deliver,” she said.

The Headmistress of the school, Mrs Frances Adelaide Hagan, on her part, expressed profound gratitude to the organisation for their efforts in promoting literacy.

She also urged Ghanaians to support the foundation in any way possible to ensure the dreams and aspirations of children are accomplished.

“We have been working with the Mobile Library Project for some months now. We are actually one of their adopted schools for the Mobile Learning Lab initiative. I must say that they are doing extremely well and as a school, we are amazed at their efforts and hope they get more support from the public and even the government as a whole to help them do more. So on behalf of my staff and students, I say thank you [to the] Mobile Library Project for celebrating International Literacy Day with us,” she said.
