We’ll protect our democracy with vigilance, it has been beneficial – Nana Addo

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo  says democratic governance has been beneficial to the country since independence.

President Akufo-Addo maintains Ghana’s economic and infrastructure development has come about through democratic governance.

Speaking at this year’s Ghana Bar Conference in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, President Akufo-Addo insisted those opposed to democratic system of governance will not be allowed any space to operate.

President Akufo-Addo said those persons are persons who are “incapable of effective popular mobilisation through accepted channels”.

He however assured the citizenry that the government will be vigilant to protect the nation against such “disdainful” characters.

“Clearly, democracy has been beneficial for the continent and for our country. We know however that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance and vigilant we shall be here in Ghana.”

“We shall not let down our guard and allow the clammy embrace of the people by anti-democrats who are disdainful and incapable of effective popular mobilization through accepted channels but who want shortcuts to power without the express support of the people.”

President Akufo-Addo’s comments come on the back of the recent coup staged in Guinea.

After gunfire in Guinea’s capital, a group of soldiers announced the dissolution of the constitution, the closure of the borders, and a nationwide curfew in a broadcast on state TV on Sunday evening [September 4, 2021].

The soldiers, led by a Special Forces Colonel, Mamady Doumbouya, had said regional governors had been replaced by military commanders and that Mr. Condé was under arrest.

They have since ordered banks to freeze all government-related accounts so as to “secure state assets”.

The UN, African Union, and ECOWAS have condemned the coup and called for a return to civilian rule.

The coup in Guinea was the fourth attempted coup in West Africa in the last year with two military takeovers in Mali and a failed coup in Niger.
