The Ghana Psychology Association is deploying a team of psychologists to the Western Regional town of Appiate-Bogoso, to offer psychological support to the victims of last Thursday’s explosion.
The incident, which occurred after a motorcycle went under a truck carrying explosives owned by Maxam Limited exploded while it was being transported to the Chirano gold mine.
13 people have been confirmed dead, while over 59 persons are also said to have been left with varying degrees of injury.
More than 170 families have directly been affected by this disaster.
However, in a Citi News interview, the National Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Psychology Association, Joy Anima Debrah announced that, the group will move to the community to help the victims deal with their loss and trauma.
“We had a call from NADMO to render our support. So we are gathering our volunteers in the Western Region to be available for that service and help with the situation. The mobilization is ongoing. Some people have already moved there and more people will join. Some families in Accra have been affected and we are working to see if we can offer them help.”
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has on its part expressed sympathy with the community after the devastation.
“We are shocked by the devastation caused to lives and properties at Bogoso-Appiate and the surrounding communities,” the association said in a statement.
“On behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the GMA, we express our deepest condolences to families that have lost loved ones to this unfortunate event.”
The association also commended the National Emergency Response Team and volunteers for their rescue efforts following the incident.
Government has donated an amount of GH¢200,000 to the victims to among other things, cater for their medical bills.
To forestall a secondary explosion, the government has deployed a joint team of police and military explosion experts to examine the situation and put in place requisite measures.
