A member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, Dr. Stephen Amoah has dismissed the minority’s call on President Akufo-Addo to dissolve the Economic Management Team.
The Minority argues that the team has failed in its duty to cushion Ghanaians in the face of continuous hikes in fuel prices and has not been able to roll out relevant policies to grow the economy.
But in an interview with Citi News, the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso said government has performed satisfactorily in the face of prevailing challenges, which he said are a global phenomenon.
According to him, there isn’t any performance standard for the economic management team; for one to claim they have fallen short of hence must be dissolved.
“We all have to be a bit more serious on the issue bothering Ghana. Which of our statutory books provide any performance parameters or indicators by which we can call for the dissolution of the government management team? There is hardship all over the world that we are trying to solve and because we are an import driven economy, about 70-84% of everything we use in this country is imported, so when there are any global disturbances, we feel the impact tangibly. We know there is hardship, and we are trying to work on it,” he said.
Ghana’s economy is going through turbulent times as it is plagued with a number of challenges, including rising inflation and the rising cost of fuel.
The country’s currency is also suffering depreciation, while the public debt level has attained an unsustainable level.
The government has called a Cabinet meeting to discuss the issues and come up with solutions to resolve them.
But the minority in parliament insists that such a meeting will not lead to any positive result.
The Ranking Member on Mines and Energy, John Jinapor, said “they cannot spend the taxpayers money on meetings and at the end of the day, it even leads to more hardship. Then they better save that money.”
