The leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators, GAUA, has called for the reinstatement of the dismissed Finance Officer of the University of Winneba (UEW).
The Chairman of the school’s Governing Council is said to have terminated the appointment of the Principal Finance Officer of the school, Francis Obeng.
The leadership of GAUA says this is contrary to the February 2 ruling of the Winneba High Court which ordered that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, and five other officers be reinstated.
The leadership alleged among others intimidation on the part of the council chairman towards convocation members.
Speaking to Citi News, the President of GAUA, Dr. Beth Offei – Awuku, said the Chairman of the Governing Council, Nana Ofori Ansah, must be called to order.
“We call on the government and the sector ministry to intervene and, with immediate effect, ensure a withdrawal of the illegitimate unilaterally written letter terminating the appointment of the Finance Officer, and in pursuit of peace, unity, and reconciliation of this great university recall and withdraw the appointment of Nana Ofori Ansah I as the Chairman of the Governing Council of UEW. His short reign has been divisive, dictatorial, and authoritarian with an unbridled penchant for using a bulldozer approach to pursue a hidden agenda.”
“The Council Chairman must be called to order and withdrawn. We will be happy if the whole idea of him being our Council Chairman is looked at again. His [Finance Officer’s] termination should be reversed. Termination should have valid reasons.”
A legal tussle, which began in July 2017, saw Prof. Mawutor Avoke and three other principal officers dismissed for some alleged financial malfeasance.
Three senior lecturers including Prof. Ephraim Avea Nsoh were later in 2019 dismissed for misconduct and insubordination.
But the Winneba High Court on Tuesday, February 2, 2022, ordered that Prof. Mawutor Avoke be reinstated including all those who were affected by the legal tussle.
