Parliament forms bi-partisan committee to probe death of woman in ambulance

Parliament has constituted a bi-partisan committee to probe the death of Augustina Awortwe, a pregnant lady who died in transit from Takoradi to Accra due to the alleged negligence of the National Ambulance Service.

The committee was formed after a debate on a private members motion filed by three members of the minority.

The six-member committee will be chaired by MP for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr Ayew Afriyie.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, expressed the hope that the committee members will set aside their political interests and professionally probe the issue.

“This house has accordingly constituted a bi-partisan committee to probe the circumstances leading to the death of Madam Augustina Awortwe who died in an ambulance when she was being transported from Holy Child Catholic Hospital to Korle Bu.”

Augustina had to be referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital due to some complications associated with a caesarean section by doctors at the Holy Child Catholic Hospital.

Her trip was, however, diverted to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital due to her worsening condition.

The staff of the Holy Child Hospital have been blamed for referring the patient to Korle-Bu instead of the nearest referral centre, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital.
