Members of the Maritime and Dockworkers Union of the Trades Union Congress are in a crunch meeting with management of the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority in Tema after two days of protest.
The workers of the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority on Tuesday commenced the strike, resulting in the cessation of sailing and berthing of vessels at the Port.
According to the workers, the action has been necessitated by the refusal of the Meridian Port Service (MPS), to hand over 20 percent of the containerised cargo to GPHA during the exclusivity period of ten (10) years as directed by Cabinet in 2019.
The union has complained that its directives have been duly communicated to MPS with several reminders, as MPS has failed to adhere to the directive of the cabinet, especially on the 20 percent container volumes since 2019.
The union is demanding that the cabinet directive should be complied with immediately.
The workers also want to stop the current attempts to hand over the reefer container at the Port back to MPS.
The strike entered its third day today.
