The incumbent Junior Common Room (JCR) executives at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science (KNUST) want management to reverse its decision to modify the JCR system.
The new system means the incumbents will be unable to occupy their roles because the JCR leadership has been limited to residents of the halls.
The incumbents are level 400 students and are not residents in their respective halls.
The University Council of the university changed the system, following the recent disturbances arising from the hall week celebrations of the University Hall.
But some of the incoming student leaders in KNUST have warned that certain decisions by the University’s Council, following recent clashes between students of University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Conti), will further threaten peace in the University community.
Speaking to Citi News, Calvin Ken Eastwoood, an incumbent Junior Common Room President for Republic Hall, said the management’s decision will not solve the problem of clashes between halls.
“It is something we cannot let slide as incumbent JCR executives, and we are appealing. It is a dire petition to management to rescind or reconsider their decision,” Mr. Eastwood added.
The National Union of Ghana Students also criticised the decision of the school’s management and said it was working on a “Student-Centered Roadmap” to address the tensions on campuses.
In a statement, NUGS said the JCR was integral and the school’s decision “does not speak to the reality and causes of these clashes.”
“We strongly urge the University to reverse the decision immediately to prevent matters from escalating at the student front,” NUGS added in the statement.
