Head of the Local Government Service, Dr. Nana Ato Arthur, has asked members of the service to desist from acts of corruption.
He maintains that the Local Government Service has the capacity in mobilizing revenue in their respective areas without depending solely on the central government.
Speaking at the inauguration of the local government service engineers in Kumasi, Dr. Arthur said departments of local assemblies must eschew corruption in the discharge of their duties.
“Eschew all forms of corrupt and ill-mannered behaviours that will taint the image of local government service. It is public knowledge that revenue mobilization in MMDAs is still very low, which makes these assemblies over-dependent on the central government for fiscal support.”
“This mostly stems from revenue leakages and an inefficient system of revenue mobilization. As engineers, you have a major role to play in checking this menace to ensure that revenues are effectively collected, more particularly from your own development control.”
Speaking at the same event, the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, Collins Augustine Ntim, charged the engineers to also exhibit professionalism in the line of duty.
“Indeed, it is time to let go the lukewarm attitude and unprofessional behaviour of some of our officers in MMDAs, Ministries and Local Government Service. Let’s deepen collaboration to ensure effective and efficient delivery of services to reduce infractions.”
