Dasuma FM in Yendi in the Northern Region has for the fourth consecutive year as part of its social cooperate responsibility organized a football gala in the Yendi municipality aimed at fostering unity in the Dagbon kingdom.
Dagbon over the years has faced chieftaincy disputes which resulted in mistrust among the citizens making the kingdom lag behind in terms of development.
Now there is an Overlord in the kingdom, the Yaa Naa who has been championing unity and development.
Dasuma radio, the partner station of Citi FM in Yendi as part of its social responsibility to help consolidate the peace has set an annual soccer competition among the various clans in Dagbon aimed at fostering unity, peace and development.
This year’s event took place on Saturday, December 24, in Yendi.
The participating clans are the Laabansi, Moshie, Butchers, Machelle, Lungsi and Sapashinima.
At the opening ceremony, the defending champions who are the Moshies played with Laabansi.
The game ended 1-1.
The Regional Minister, Saani Alhassan Sayibu who was at the ceremony said the soccer games are very necessary as they will help promote peace and unity among the people of Yendi.
“I want to thank the organisers for this wonderful program. This is a very good program in the sense that it will help consolidate the gains made in the kingdom. There is now peace and what we are looking for is unity. Programs like this are going to help consolidate the unity, and surely it will bring development to the kingdom”.
He said this should be replicated across the Dagbon kingdom such that the old Dagbon culture of playmates among the various clans will be revived.
“I think by next year the organisers should think of extending it to cover the entire kingdom. It is a good program that will help us as a people”.
The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakar Mahama II who was represented by Kar Naa Abdulai Natogmah also lauded the program and pledged his full support for it.
“I thank the organisers for the programme and I want to pledge my full support for it. I entreat everyone to support them. This is going to strengthen the peace and unity in Dagbon”.
The Chief Executive Officer for Dasuma FM, Alhaji Baba Daney in an interview with Citi News said the aim of the soccer competition is to help foster peace and unity.
“As a media organisation, our main purpose is to promote peace and unity in the kingdom. In the Dagbon kingdom, there are various clans which are playmates to each other like the Laabansi and the Butchers, the Machelle and Butchers, Dagombas and Moshies. So to help in fostering unity again, we decided to organize a soccer gala among them to see the champions. This is to help us all forget the past and focus on developing our kingdom”.
The MP for Yendi, Farouck Aliu Mahama also graced the ceremony and supported the organisers with cash of GH¢10,000.00 and water.
He disclosed that another AstroTurf is going to be constructed for the Overlord of Dagbon.
“I am here to support my big brother Alhaji Baba Daney for organising this soccer competition. I am supporting the organisers with a sum of GH¢10,000.00 and assorted water. I will also want to say that very soon another football field is going to be constructed at Dagbon State to be named after the Overlord of the kingdom”.
Some residents who could not hide their joy thanked Dasuma radio for the competition. They also reiterated the idea of it fostering unity in the kingdom.
“We are happy that this time, Dagbon we are one people, our main challenge now is under development, and we thank the Dasuma radio for the organisation. This is going to consolidate the unity in Dagbon”.
Later there was a second game between the Lungsis and the Machelles which ended 5-2 in favour of the Lungsis.
