The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), says it has officially commenced investigations into the inferno at the new Kejetia market.
Parts of the market were gutted by fire on Thursday evening March 15, where several shops were affected.
The GNFS said it has started gathering information on the ground to ascertain the cause of the fire.
The Ashanti regional fire commander, ACFO1 Henry Giwah, noted that they have been able to identify the shop in which the fire started.
Speaking on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, ACFO1 Giwah, explained, “we have started with the investigations, we have been able to identify the shop the fire started, and we are yet to zoom on exactly what happened before the fire. We do take account of eyewitnesses accounts by most at times we want to ascertain vis-avis our own professional way of finding out what they are saying, before we can confirm and put it out on air”.
He said they will seek for technical support from other agencies if the need be assuring that they will not delay in producing their report.
“We have heard so many stories, but we wouldn’t want these to prejudice our investigations. We want to do our own investigation and based on the interviews that we will get on the ground, we can marry the two. For now, It’s going to be fire service investigations. If we need any assistance, we will call on other agencies for their technical support. We have heard someone was even cooking when we told them not to. Fire investigations take time, but I hope this one will not take too long, but I can’t give timelines,” he stated.
The new Kejetia market will be closed down for the next three days following a meeting between the management of the market and the leadership of the traders within the facility.
The closure of the market will commence on Friday, March, 17.
