The Wiki Green Initiative in partnership with Eco Warriors Movement and A-Rocha KNUST have launched a campaign to digitize Ghana’s environmental sector on Wikipedia and its sister projects.

This initiative spearheaded by three Ghanaian Wikipedians; Otuo-Akyampong Boakye, Maxwell Beganim, and Stephen Dakyi seeks to explore ways tertiary students can contribute climate and environmental information on Wikipedia – the largest online encyclopedia by creating new articles and improving already existing articles.

A workshop on the introduction to Wikipedia informed participants about the open knowledge movement. The training session was facilitated by an environmental scientist and a Wikipedian, Otuo-Akyampong Boakye and educator and wikipedian Maxwell Beganim.

“Last year the Wiki Green Conference was illuminating as it shook the foundations of the basic understanding of climate change of many participants, this year it will be brain racking”, Mr Otuo-Akyampong said in anticipation of the upcoming 2023 Wiki Green Conference which will be held in Accra and Tamale in May and June respectively.

“Young Africans should contribute to decolonization of the web by contributing in open projects most especially Wikipedia,” Maxwell Beganim added.

The Wiki Green Conference is an annual gathering of young climate and environmental advocates to share and learn, collaborate and co-create solutions to global environmental challenges as they provide visibility and publicity to these challenges using the Wikipedia platform and its sister projects.
