The Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly will start desilting drainage systems in the municipality on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.
This was made known when the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, visited the assembly in Accra on Monday, June 12, 2023.
The Ablekuma North Municipal Chief Executive, Kofi Fori, explained to the media that the work in his municipality had been delayed due to a procurement exercise. Despite the disbursement of funds, the procurement process caused a delay in initiating the desilting works.
“We are starting the work tomorrow, let us exercise patience. We delayed because we were conducting a procurement process, and we can’t break the procurement law. We can’t just start because you want to come here, and we will be called to answer for it,” he stated.
The minister’s visit was to assess how well the municipal assemblies were doing under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.
Under the GARID project, the participating assemblies have received a grant of GH₵420,000 each year. This grant scheme is one of the initiatives implemented by the project to enhance the maintenance and operations of drains in communities situated along the Odaw River channel.
