The Acting President of the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council (GNCFC), Nana Joojo Solomon, says the council is being cautious in backing calls for the extension of the closed season beyond one month.
Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, speaking at the National Blue Economy Summit in Accra, indicated that some fishermen were asking for the one-month closed season for fishing to be extended.
Speaking to Citi News on the matter, the Acting President of the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council (GNCFC), Nana Joojo Solomon, stated that while some fishermen are in favor of extending the closed season, the council wants to use this year as an opportunity to assess its effectiveness before fully endorsing an extension.
“We want to take precautions. We do not want to rush into anything because other factors have come to affect the closed season. So we want to confirm the effectiveness of this year’s closed season and then we can confidently tell regulators and policymakers that we want an extension,” he said.
