The Ablekuma West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), George Cyril Bray, has urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to embark on developmental projects in anticipation of their common funds.
Mr. Bray said that although the funds are sometimes in arrears, the government is making a concerted effort to disburse money to the various assemblies.
Speaking to the media after presenting some items to people with disabilities in the Ablekuma West Municipality, Bray said that the country will develop if the common funds are used judiciously.
“This year, from what I understand, they had to go to Parliament to work on the distribution and all that. Some work goes into it before it is disbursed, so obviously, you cannot have it coming probably ahead of time. We can only have it a quarter in arrears.”
“But then because we are assured of its coming, because we know of the amount we are going to receive, we can equally go ahead if you are undertaking constructions and all that, award the contract while you await it comes in, give it to the contractor, they also deliver their side of the bargain, and then the country will move on,” he said.
NDC Accuses Ayawaso West Wuogon MP of Using Common Fund for Political Activities
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ayawaso West Wuogon has accused the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, of using the district assembly’s common fund to fund her political activities.
The party says the fund, which is meant to address developmental challenges in areas within the constituency, is not being used for its purpose.
Bismark Aborbi Aryitey, chairman of the NDC in Ayawaso West Wuogon, said in an interview with Citi News that Alhassan has not accounted for the common fund.
“Definitely, she has the common fund that she has not accounted for. I am a stakeholder in this constituency. There is no occasion where Lydia Alhassan has even met the Landlord Association to tell them that the common fund that came, I believe this gutter is worrying you, so let me fix it for you.”
“So, it is the common fund that is being spread in the constituency, especially spent on NPP members. However, Ghanaian voters are now discerning.”
