Management of Citi TV and Citi FM has promised to offer scholarships to the top three Senior High School students in the Torkpo community within the Shai Osudoku district of the Greater Accra Region who excel in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The scholarships will cover the students’ fees at any tertiary institution in the country.
The announcement was made by Citi TV/Citi FM Managing Director, Samuel Attah-Mensah on Thursday, October 26, 2023, when management and staff of the media firm went in Torkpo to break ground for the commencement of their “OperationRebuild” initiative.
“OperationRebuild” is aimed at building resettlement centres for persons affected by the Akosombo dam spillage.
“I came with my boss [Nik Amarteifio],” Mr. Attah-Mensah said.
“He whispered something to me and I think I should communicate to you. He said that, upon seeing what is going on and how lives are at risk, he believes it will also impact education. We as an institution have an educational scholarship scheme [known as COPE]. So he has asked me to let you know that, next month the 2023 WASSCE results will come out. The top three students from this community automatically get a scholarship from us to go to the university.”
The announcement was met with resounding applause from the community members present.
Meanwhile, the first resettlement center under the “OperationRebuild” initiative will be sited at a school in Torkpo. The center will be converted back into classrooms after the floodwaters recede and it is safe for the people to return to their homes.
Once the Torkpo structure is completed, two other areas will also benefit from the initiative.
Each resettlement center will be a dormitory-style building that can accommodate at least 200 people and will come with ancillary facilities such as washrooms.
Mr. Attah-Mensah disclosed that each center will cost GH¢200,000. A number of companies have already made generous donations toward the initiative’s successful completion.
On Thursday, Ghana Petroleum Mooring Systems donated GH¢200,000 and GH¢30,000 worth of water towards the project.
Tropical Cable and Conductor Limited pledged to provide all the cable needs of the resettlement centres.
The Akosombo Dam spillage left many communities requiring essential supplies, shelter, and clean water.
Over 30,000 people have been displaced from their homes, and the situation is becoming increasingly dire.
