The Denkira Development Association (DDA) has called on Parliament to review Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which allows for mining in forest reserves in the country.
This comes in response to reports that a mining firm filed an application with the Minerals Commission for a permit to mine within the borders of the Kakum Forest Reserve. Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the public raised concerns about the potential impact of mining in the Kakum National Park, a renowned tourist site in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa.
In a statement issued on Monday, the DDA acknowledged the Minerals Commission’s quick rebuttal and release, stating that the application had been refused. However, the DDA expressed the conviction that LI 2462, which formed the basis of the application, must be reviewed by Parliament.
“As a community organization dedicated to the preservation and sustainable development of the Denkyira State, which is partly covered by the Kakum National Park, DDA strongly expresses disapproval of any activity that may pose a threat to our precious natural resources.”
The DDA emphasized that the Kakum Forest Reserve, known for its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, is an ecological treasure that demands the country’s utmost protection. The Association noted that the reserve plays an indispensable role in supporting Ghana’s tourism industry, attracting visitors worldwide who come to admire its breathtaking beauty, canopy walkway, and natural wonders.
“We express our concern regarding the long-term impact of this legislation and, therefore, we call upon the Parliament of Ghana to conduct a thorough review of LI -2462 to ensure that it aligns with the principles of sustainable development and provides adequate protection for our cherished natural resources.
“We further implore the Minerals Commission to stick to its earlier stance so that no portion of the park is leased to any individual or company for the purpose of mining activities. DDA will vigorously resist any form of mining in the Kakum Forest Reserve,” stated the DDA.
