The Minority in Parliament says the establishment of Development Authorities by the government is a waste of resources, hence the need for them to be outlawed.
The caucus says the authorities, such as the Coastal Development Authority (CODA), have failed to live up to their mandates.
Debating on the budget estimates for the Office of the Government Machinery, the Minority Chief Whip, Governs Agbodza, said the establishment of the authorities was a pretext to amass more resources for the presidency for wrongful spending.
“Do you actually need a new government entity to drill boreholes? You don’t. It is a waste of resources and only a pretense to go and put more resources under the presidency. Then guess what, when they go and put those monies under the presidency and we are doing the allocation, they hardly give the monies to those organizations. They spend it anyhow they like. Mr. Speaker, my recommendation will be that at least the development authorities should be outlawed.”
“It is completely unnecessary, a waste of resources, and actually relocate those activities to the right authorities. The Development Authorities’ activities can be perfectly carried out by the Ministry of Local Government and then the District Assemblies without any show of inefficiencies,” he stated.
