Coup plotters case: I was persecuted – ACP Agordzo

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Agordzo has stated that he was persecuted over an alleged attempt to overthrow the Akufo-Addo government.

ACP Benjamin Agordzo, the late Dr. Mac Palm, and eight others were arraigned in 2021 on counts of conspiracy to commit high treason and high treason.

On January 24, 2024, the High Court, however, acquitted ACP Benjamin Agordzo, while six others were convicted for counts of conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason.

The six convicted for plotting a coup have been sentenced to death by hanging.

He said he never had any thoughts of being sentenced to death because he knew the prosecution didn’t have any evidence against him.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Citi TV, he said “I never ever had that thought of being sentenced to death. I could never have been part of that, and I knew there was no evidence. There was no evidence about me, and I knew the kind of stories they were cooking were not going to hold.”

“The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame himself, said that their evidence was not watertight and that it was weak, and yet they proceeded. And that tells you that it was persecution. They decided to persecute me. I was persecuted.”

He attributed his persecution to his outright comments against the presidency.

ACP Agordzo stated that the government didn’t like his return to the police service, hence the dragging of the case, which spanned 5 years.

“I don’t know why they did that, maybe because I’m outspoken, challenged the status quo, I spoke openly about the presidency, not an individual, and revealed certain things. I retired and was on trial in November 2023, that is what they had planned. They [the government] didn’t want me to return to the police service. That is why they will start a case up to a point and there will be nolle prosequi. And they will go in for another higher charge and then there will be the same facts, disclosures, and nothing new and yet a higher charge,” ACP Agordzo claimed.

He alleged the persecution against him by the NPP government started during former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s regime when he was dismissed over something trivial.

“This is not the first time it has happened to me [persecution]. It has happened before, during former President Kufuor’s regime, I was dismissed from the police service for a flimsy thing, for standing for the truth in 2007. I had to appeal and was called back in 2009 before former president Kufuor left office.”

ACP Agordzo denied being anti-NPP

“When it mattered most, I served my country, both parties NPP and NDC. Maybe they [NPP] don’t like me, but I have not given them the cause to dislike me.”

ACP Agordzo, who retired in November 2023, said he may return to the classroom to teach.
