The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) is urging the Scholarship Secretariat Scheme to form alliances with various tertiary institutions to help alleviate the payment of student fees and bursaries.
This follows a protest at the secretariat by members of the Association of Students with Disabilities at the University of Education, Winneba, and the University of Cape Coast over the non-payment of fees and bursaries.
According to them, their respective school managements have threatened to defer their courses if payments are not made promptly.
In an interview with Citi News, the President of NUGS, Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, explained that this would prevent students from deferring their courses.
“We clearly understand the hardship in the country, but we are suggesting that if a specific amount of money going to the fund to support the scholarship secretariat is not that huge, then the scholarship secretariat should form alliances with these universities so that our students don’t end up deferring their programs because of the funds or the scheme or the secretariat’s inability to reimburse the amount of money that is supposed to cater for the education of these students who are on the scholarship scheme.”
“Similarly, we are hoping that the scholarship secretariat could adapt this strategy such that if there are one or two issues affecting the funds in reimbursing the amount of money, the universities would understand or because of the commitment and then allow the students to go through the academic procedures successfully knowing that the scholarship secretariat is going to pay the amount of money due to the various schools.”
