Journalists have no confidence in NMC – Albert Dwumfour

Albert Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), says journalists have lost faith in the National Media Commission (NMC).

This remark was made following the NMC Chairman’s criticism of the GJA’s decision to blacklist two Members of Parliament (MPs).

The Chairman encourages resolving such acts of impunity against journalists through legal means.

In a rebuttal during an Eyewitness News interview on Citi FM, Mr. Dwumfour challenged the NMC’s efforts to protect journalists’ rights.

He highlighted that the NMC appears to concentrate exclusively on resolving concerns brought up by politicians and demanding apologies from journalists.

Mr. Dwumfour stated that the GJA aims to terminate attacks on journalists by blacklisting individuals who perpetrate such offenses.

“What confidence has the NMC reposed in the media or in our members to even have confidence that they can deal with matters like this? All they know is that when politicians report issues of unprofessionalism or ethical conduct against journalists to them, then they will sit on it, come out with decisions asking journalists to go and apologize, do all sorts of things. After how many times have they dealt with issues about attacks, NMC should come and tell us.

“We want to end impunity against journalists. And in ending it, we believe that the best way to register our displeasure, the best way to let the system know that they have failed us,” he stated.
