The National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has taken a swipe at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for promoting corruption and defending his appointees engaged in corruption-related cases during his 7-year regime.
The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023, released on January 30, 2024, by Transparency International (TI), stated that Ghana scored zero for the fourth consecutive year in fighting corruption.
According to him, successive governments did not enable corruption as much as it’s being witnessed under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.
He cited corruption cases that have hit the government in the past 7 years.
“Never in the history of Ghana have we seen any government enable, facilitate, promote, and defend corruption as we have seen in the last 7 years under Akufo-Addo’s government. The evidence is there, from the sale of 5 million litres of contaminated fuel, in flagrant disregard for public procurement law, and to date, the proceeds of that illegal transaction have not even been accounted for. From the Public Procurement Authority ‘donkomi’ contracts for sale scandal to the galamsey scandal, to the missing excavator’s scandal, nobody is asking questions,” Sammy Gyamfi said on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, on February 1, 2024.
The NDC National Communications Officer asserted that Akufo-Addo’s administration has not matched up with the records of former president John Dramani Mahama, chastising the government for failing to fight corruption by strengthening anti-corruption institutions.
“If they claim they are fighting corruption, strengthening state institutions, how come John Dramani Mahama’s worst performance [On Corruption Perception Index] is their best? How come they have not been able to score higher than the 43% they inherited? How come they have not been able to match the record of John Mahama? They have not strengthened any corrupt institution, neither are they interested in fighting corruption. They are interested in PR gimmicks,” he pointed out.
He also blasted the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration for fighting corruption fighters.
