The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghana’s Volta Region has accused the government of misleading the public about the allocation of funds to support victims of last year’s flood disaster in the Lower Volta area caused by spillages from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.
In a press release on Thursday, March 14, the NDC claims President Akufo-Addo falsely stated that 80 million Ghanaian cedis (GH¢80 million) had been released to aid affected communities during his Independence Day speech.
According to their investigations and consultations within the affected areas, there is no evidence of the promised relief funds being disbursed.
Instead, the NDC highlighted the contributions made by private individuals, organizations, companies, and foreign entities to support the affected communities.
The NDC urged the NPP Government to cease politicizing the disaster, provide clarity on the status of the allocated funds, and ensure the timely delivery of assistance to the intended beneficiaries.
The people of the Volta Region have continued to grapple with the aftermath of the flood disaster, including displacement, loss of livelihoods, and property damage.
The NDC vowed to “relentlessly continue to advocate for the rights, interests and welfare” of the people in the Volta Region.
