Otto Addo’s return not surprising – Dan Kweku Yeboah

Head of Sports at Despite Media, Dan Kweku Yeboah, has stated that Otto Addo has always been a favourite of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and that he is not surprised he has been reappointed to lead the Black Stars.

Otto Addo was rehired by the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association on Friday, March 15.

Dan Kweku Yeboah said on a case-on-case basis, the former Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton, is better than Otto Addo but he has always been the favoured one.

The 48-year-old Otto Addo guided Ghana to qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup but resigned after the Black Stars were knocked out in the group stages in Qatar.

Appearing on The Big Issue on Citi FM/Citi TV, the football journalist said Otto Addo had always been the preferred choice for persons and leadership of the Ghana Football Association.

“Ahead of Chris’ appointment, there was a tussle between some government officials and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as to who we should go for. Clearly, on paper, apart from the fact that we have now had the benefit of hindsight that Chris couldn’t perform, ahead of appointing Chris and Otto Addo, clearly, Chris was far ahead of Otto Addo in terms of experience and everything but the GFA quickly flew to Germany to negotiate with Atto Addo while some government officials were flirting with Chris, so clearly, it has been their choice all these while and so I am not surprised.”

He, however, told Selorm Adonoo that the only positive aspect of the appointment is the unprecedented three-year mandate given Otto Addo.

“The positive aspect of it is the three years that they are giving him because he will have the time to plan. I don’t remember the last time a Black Stars coach was given a three-year mandate.”

Otto Addo’s first competitive matches will be in June, when the Black Stars will play Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
