Dr. Ofosu-Asare, the Executive Chairman of the 2023 African Games, has emphasized the importance of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in managing the Borteyman Sports Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium.
He advocates for a model that ensures sustainable and self-sufficient operations for the two host venues for the just-ended All-African Games.
In an interview on The Point of View, on Citi TV, Dr. Ofosu-Asare suggested that such a partnership would lead to the long-term sustainability of the facilities.
“I will argue for a PPP, I wouldn’t want it to be run by a state institution so that you can have sustainability. It can be self-sustaining,” he told host Bernard Avle.
Highlighting the significance of the newly constructed facilities, Dr. Ofosu-Asare regards them as a crucial legacy of the Games, playing a key role in bridging the sports infrastructure gaps.
“I will put it to the facilities that we built, to me it will be the biggest legacy we have achieved so far. We have been able to narrow the sporting infrastructure deficiencies, particularly for the lesser discipline sports and we now have a first-class swimming pool,” he said.
The newly constructed multipurpose sports facility, Borteyman Sports Complex was commissioned on February 13, barely a month to the commencement of the 13th All-African Games.
The facility is said to accommodate a total of seven competitive sports, including table tennis, handball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, badminton, and the triathlon.
Among the notable features of the Borteyman facilities are a 1,000-seater capacity swimming pool, comprising a 10-lane competition swimming pool and an eight-lane warm-up swimming pool, alongside a multipurpose Sports Hall capable of seating 1,000 spectators for various events such as basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting.
Additionally, there is a 500-seater temporary dome for handball, volleyball, judo, karate, taekwondo, fencing, arm-wrestling, and a five-tennis court complex, including a 1,000-seater Centre Court.
The University of Ghana Sports Stadium and Rugby Field was commissioned on March 2, in Accra.
The University of Ghana Sports Stadium also has modern amenities with world-class standards.
