Some schools in the Ahafo Ano South West in the Ashanti region are left out in the world’s technological drive as they struggle to access basic IT materials to enhance teaching and learning.

This has necessitated the construction of an AI centre in Wioso to address the IT needs of schools in Wioso and neighbouring communities.

In all, about 2500 students will be benefiting from the centre set up by the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation in collaboration with Newmont Ghana.

The District Director of Education for Ahafo Ano South West highlighted some challenges the schools within the district were faced with and how the initiative will impact students and teachers within the district.

“The classrooms were there alright, teachers were there but the availability of IT devices, computers, tablets, projectors, all these that go to support the learning of IT and other learning areas were not there. But with this facility or lab, I think that challenge is dealt with. And I think it is a golden opportunity for teachers, and learners in particular to make use of this opportunity so that learning with IT as the world is going becomes a reality in order for us not to lag behind. We need to move along with the world”, the District Director of Education for Ahafo Ano South West, Justin Kwasi B indicated.

Hiahene and Board chair of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, Nana Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Owoahene II highlighted the essence of establishing the lab.

Nana Prof. said, “Today, you have the opportunity to use this computer and AI lab to better your chances and future. This is a partnership that we have created with AI lab but we cannot do that alone with our money and our minds unless we have someone who can help us with the application and this is where Coral Reef comes in.

They have the expertise that will teach you the AI principles and how to apply them so that you can send your robot to the farm to fetch you wood or develop something that will help improve your environment and standard of living. Also, at the Manhyia District Hospital, the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, in collaboration with the Joberg Foundation, saw to the extension of the maternity block to address issues of congestion.”

The medical superintendent at the Manhyia District Hospital addressed the media highlighting some of the challenges that necessitated the extension of the block.

“Manhyia Hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in the Ashanti region. Apart from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. I will say it is the next busiest. We do about eighty deliveries in a week and in a year like four thousand deliveries. So, any facility that is doing such a number of deliveries is very busy.

So today we are lucky they are handing over the extension of the maternity block to us. What brought about the construction of this unit had to do with the congestion in our maternity unit where mothers and their babies are sleeping on the floor after delivery, he bemoaned.”
