The Ghana Education Service (GES) has urged parents of students in public Senior High Schools not to pay any fee for registration for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
This comes after concerns were raised following the announcement by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) that candidates sitting for the exams are required to pay a registration fee of GH¢465.
Addressing the media, the Director General of the GES, Dr. Eric Nkansah clarified that these fees have been covered by the government under the Free SHS initiative and that candidates in private Senior High Schools are the ones expected to pay.
“All students with our government secondary schools under the Free SHS programme are not going to pay that GH¢465 because it has already been absorbed by the Free SHS programme.”
Dr. Nkansah also directed that students be made to complete their WASSCE registration when school reopens on April 17 and not be recalled from their vacation.
“We have also learnt that some of our final year students have been asked to come back and complete their WASSCE registration and we want to say unequivocally that no student should be asked to come to complete this WASSCE registration and the reason is simple because, by the time they come back to school on April 17, there will be enough time to complete the registration.”
