The assemblyman for Sefwi Akontombra in the Western North Region, Ernest Adu Gyamfi, has expressed deep frustration over the challenges of removing illegal miners from his town.
His remarks followed a clash between local youth and illegal miners in Sampa on Sunday, March 24th.
According to reports, the youth took action by destroying equipment owned by the illegal miners. Despite facing numerous obstacles, Adu Gyamfi reiterated their unwavering dedication to safeguarding their water bodies from the detrimental effects of illegal mining activities.
The assemblyman highlighted the efforts made by the District Chief Executive (DCE) and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) in tackling the issue.
However, he also emphasized the persistent resistance encountered when confronting illegal miners, making the task exceedingly challenging.
Despite the obstacles in the fight, the assemblyman issued a stern warning to the illegal miners, asserting that they would not tolerate the destruction of their water bodies any longer.
“The DCE and the BNI have been trying and all the time, there have been some policemen coming to fight the illegal miners and when you fight them, they fight you too and it is proving difficult.
“We recently drove them away from the town and they returned and it is very difficult to fight these people but we have sent a warning to them that we will not allow them to destroy our waterbodies.”
