Rockson Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, Member of Parliament for South Dayi, has raised concerns about Attorney General Godfred Dame’s continuous stay in office.
Mr Dame has been captured in an audio attempting to coerce Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance case to implicate the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
The audio was revealed after Richard Jakpa said in open court that he had been receiving calls from the Attorney General at unusual hours with the intent to implicate the Minority Leader, Dr. Ato Forson.
Dr. Ato Forson, the current Minority Leader and former Deputy Finance Minister, is under trial for his alleged involvement in the procurement of defective ambulances for Ghana. This case has triggered public discourse, with some advocating for the resignation of the Attorney General.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) aired the alleged recording between the Attorney General and Richard Jakpa during a press conference on Tuesday, May 28.
In an interview with Bernard Avle on Citi TV’s The Point of View, Dafeamekpor warned that the Attorney General’s continued presence in office could jeopardise a potential investigation into the leaked tape.
He accused Mr. Dame of violating the Constitution by privately interacting with the third defendant.
Dafeamekpor added that the Attorney General’s behaviour constitutes fraudulent misconduct.
“The Attorney General’s conduct does not only bother on professional misconduct which if you refer to the LI 24, 23, enacted in 2020, which he himself appeared before our committee in parliament to actively sponsor through the enactment process. Every conduct of the Attorney General breached any of these extensively. On that basis, he cannot be deemed to continue in the role of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice for the Republic of Ghana.
He emphasised, “His conduct also amounts to fraudulent misconduct, conduct that is unbecoming of an Attorney General. It also amounts to tampering with a witness and it also amounts to subversion of the cause of justice. Which are all criminal offences.
“His continuous stay in office is a danger to having these investigations conducted first of all and leading to some proper prosecution. He doesn’t even have the confidence of the bar to lead the bar, so he has to go.”
The MP raised concerns that if Ato Forson were to file a complaint with the General Legal Council, he would not receive a fair hearing as long as the AG remains in office.
He urged for the dismissal of Godfred Dame to facilitate a thorough investigation, stating that the NDC firmly believes that the Attorney General should and must resign.
“The NDC is firm in its conviction that the Attorney General ought to leave, must leave, as an Attorney General.
