Work is progressing on the Kaase-Sokoban Road after concerns by motorists about the continuous deteriorating nature of the stretch.
Tanker drivers belonging to the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union in the Ashanti Region in June last year embarked on a sit-down strike to draw attention to the deteriorating condition of roads that lead to the Kumasi depot of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation.
This road is one of the busiest and most important in the Ashanti Region.
The road provides access to Sokoban Wood Village, the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant, and the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) depot.
For years, there have been continuous complaints from motorists about the poor condition of this road.
The heavy-duty trucks traversing this route exacerbated the conditions, particularly during the rainy season.
However, there is now relief for motorists following Citi News’ recent spotlight on their difficulties.
Yahaya Abdul-Karim, a motorist, told Citi News, “The road was in very poor condition, but it has improved from what it was. We are grateful to the authorities for addressing the issue. Previously, we had to take alternative routes because of the challenges we encountered on this stretch. It was also tough for commercial drivers and passengers. Now, we feel relieved.”
The tanker drivers have told Citi News their concerns are being addressed following the rehabilitation of the road.
Sambian Edmund Baba, Middle Belt Chairman, Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union expressed appreciation for the government emphasising that about 90 percent of the road construction is done which he believed would be completed soon.
“We are well pleased with the government now. The strike we went to was not against any person. We were only trying to alert the world that we want people to be protected, we want properties to be protected. And I think the government has heeded it and we are now satisfied.
“We are satisfied because the government is working on the road. Let’s say what I’ve seen they’ve done about 90 percent of the road.”
Meanwhile, contractors are also working on other link roads within the enclave.
