Security analyst, Adib Sani, has linked the prevalence of land guards to the authorities’ inability to address the issue effectively.
This comment was made in response to the murder of a military officer over a land dispute at Kasoa Millenium City.
During an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Citi TV’s The Big Issue, he attributed the activities of landguards to systemic inefficiencies.
“I think our approach over the period has been very much geared towards the outer of the ‘onion’, ignoring the very fundamental underlining issues that create that enabling environment for this menace to exist,” he stated.
Adib Sani expressed concern over the bureaucratic and sometimes ineffective processes involved in securing government services for land protection. This, he believes, encourages individuals to resort to the services of land guards.
“Let’s be truthful to ourselves, in a lot of cases, acquiring or accessing government services is so bureaucratic and, in some cases, so ineffective to the extent that people are encouraged to resort to the services of land guards. But I don’t encourage the acquiring of their [land guard] services.”
He further noted that not only private individuals but also government entities employ the services of landguards.
“We have seen a consistent pattern of individuals who own lands, including estate companies and government institutions. Believe it or not, acquire the service of these land guards whose responsibility is to ensure that you have the land whether it is legally yours or not.
“And I agree with the honourable [Samuel Ayeh Paye] when he said there’s no difference between land guards and armed robbers because they also use arms,” Adib Sani said
